The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) resides within the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute (HPHCI), and is an appointing department of Harvard Medical School.  DPM does the research that helps provide information to people at all levels of our health care system, from government health officials to private citizens faced with day-to-day choices about how to maintain their own health. We inform policy makers who make decisions about insurance coverage, and individual clinicians and patients who need reliable evidence about what treatments and medications work best for specific conditions. Here at DPM we work to create a base of knowledge that will enrich both health care systems and the quality of medical education.


The Biostatistician will provide statistical support for faculty biostatisticians in the DPM Biostatistics Center. S/he will work with the faculty biostatisticians on statistical methods development and evaluation projects, data analyses, results summary and interpretation, and manuscript/report preparation using a variety of statistical methodologies and statistical software packages.


  • Write statistical algorithms, with guidance from faculty biostatisticians, for methods development and evaluation projects
  • Perform data analysis, with guidance from faculty biostatisticians, using a variety of statistical models.
  • Take primary responsibility for summarizing results.
  • Assist faculty biostatisticians with statistics-related work and consultation.
  • Assist faculty biostatisticians with preparing reports on statistical work for project deliverables and professional conferences.


Master’s Degree in biostatistics, statistics, or a related quantitative field.

  • Proficiency in SAS statistical software including SAS Macro, SAS/STAT, SAS/Graph.
  • Interest in and experience with statistical methods development
  • Knowledge and experience with state-of-the-art statistical methodology and analysis such as propensity score models, mixed effects models, etc.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal guidance on simultaneous projects
  • Knowledge and experience with other statistical software such as R and Stata a plus.
  • Experience with and interest in manuscript writing and preparation a plus
  • Relevant experience in a health care, academic, or research environment preferred.


Report to faculty biostatisticians.  Also has extensive contact with DPM faculty, project coordinators, and outside collaborators.
